Tablet theft an epidemic in the making
Some security experts are calling tablet theft an “epidemic in the making,” given their unprecedented adoption in homes, schools and businesses. If you own a tablet, now is the time to take steps to keep it safe.
Tablet Theft Prevention Tips
- Never leave your tablet unattended, use a security device to stow if you leave it alone
- Don’t use your tablet near the exit of a cafe, restaurant or library – it’s too easy to snatch and run
- When seated in a public place, such as a restaurant or airport waiting room, try to sit so you are facing everyone (nobody to your rear)
- Never leave your tablet in the car. If you absolutely must, stow it in the trunk discreetly
- Don’t put your tablet in the pocket on a plane – you’d be surprised to find out how many are left behind!
- Keep your tablet stowed in a bag with you (on your lap or between your feet) on public transit, in taxies or at a restaurant
- Keep a low profile: don’t use your tablet on the street, on transit or in other high risk locations
- Don’t drape your tablet-carrying bag over a chair – always retain physical contact with it
- Lock your doors & windows in your home and don’t leave your tablet in plain view of your window (more on preventing burglary & environmental design)
- Display your contact information on your lock screen wallpaper
- Record device identifiers (serial number, make/model. ESN/PIN, identifiable characteristics) in a safe place
- Use tracking and recovery software
- Use a tablet cable lock (though it’s not 100% secure as cables can be cut) or better yet use a Gorilla Grip to stow
- Password protect your tablet
Most of all, be aware of your surroundings. Don’t make yourself or your tablet an easy target. It is not only the most important thing you can do to protect your property, but also it is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself.
